The internet was recently flooded with shocking reports suggesting that billionaire banker Tony Elumelu and his wife, Awele Elumelu, had ended their marriage over alleged family issues. The story quickly gained traction across platforms like Instagram, X , Facebook, and TikTok, drawing widespread reactions from the public.
However, the claims have now been confirmed as completely false. United Bank for Africa (UBA), where Elumelu serves as Chairman, dismissed the reports as malicious and defamatory, and aimed at damaging the reputation of the bank and its chairman.
Authorities have moved in on those responsible for spreading the misinformation. Reports say the arrested individuals have been referred to law enforcement authorities. It was also stated that investigations are still ongoing and more arrests may be made.
UBA also issued a strong warning to the public, cautioning that sharing unverified and damaging information could attract serious legal consequences, including both civil and criminal liability. The marriage between Tony Elumelu and Awele Elumelu remains intact, and the viral divorce story has been exposed as fake. With arrests already made, this case serves as a strong reminder: always verify before you share.
